Where Should You Hit Every Pickleball Shot? The Ultimate Placement Guide

Shot placement almost always beats raw power in pickleball.

Knowing how to hit a shot is only half the battle—knowing where to direct the ball is what separates casual players from competitive winners. Here is a target-by-target guide for the 5 essential pickleball shots.

1. The Drive

  • Target: Aim deep toward your opponent’s baseline, preferably cross-court.
  • When to Use: Attack balls that are high enough to drive comfortably. A deep drive pins your opponents back and limits their attacking opportunities.

2. The Third Shot Drop

  • Target: Land the ball softly inside your opponent’s Kitchen (Non-Volley Zone).
  • When to Use: Use a gentle arc to clear the net smoothly. This neutralizes your opponents at the Kitchen line while buying you time to move forward.

3. The Dink

  • Target: Land the ball softly inside the Kitchen, preferably targeted at your opponent’s feet.
  • When to Use: Cross-court dinks provide a higher margin for error and lower net clearance. Stay patient and force your opponent to make the first mistake.

4. The Lob

  • Target: Hit high and deep over opponents positioned close to the Kitchen line, aiming near the baseline while keeping the ball in bounds.
  • When to Use: Use the lob as a tactical surprise shot rather than a regular pattern to push aggressive opponents back.

5. The Volley

  • Target: Aim into open space or directly at your opponent’s feet whenever possible.
  • When to Use: Keep your swing compact for better control, and remember: never volley while stepping on or inside the Kitchen line.
