Stop Attacking From Below the Net: Ball Height Decides the Shot

One of the biggest unforced error triggers in intermediate pickleball is trying to attack balls that sit below net level. Driving or speeding up a low ball forces an upward trajectory, giving opponents an easy opportunity to counter-attack or smash.

To control the point, let ball height dictate your decision-making:

1. Low Ball = Reset Soft Into the Kitchen
* When a ball contacts below the net tape, resist the temptation to speed it up.
* Execute a soft dink or reset drop that lands softly in your opponent’s Non-Volley Zone.
* Neutralizing pace prevents your opponents from attacking and buys you time to re-establish position.

2. High Ball = Attack With Pace & Placement
* When a ball sits above net height, accelerate your paddle with confidence.
* Target open court seams, your opponent’s feet, or their non-dominant hip.
* Keep your wrist firm and finish downward to keep the attack inside the court boundary.

> Key Rule: Patience turns defense into offense. Never force a speed-up from below the net—wait for the high ball before launching your attack!
