Mistake Fix: Your Toe Is the Fault at the Kitchen Line

One of the most frustrating ways to give away free points in pickleball is a Kitchen (NVZ) foot fault. Stepping on or over the Non-Volley Zone line while hitting a volley is an immediate penalty. Because the Kitchen line belongs entirely to the Kitchen, even touching the line with the tip of your shoe constitutes a fault.

Fixing this habit requires setting a visible safety margin and building balance-focused footwork into your court movement.

1. Check Your Toe Position

Never hug the line directly. Make a conscious effort to establish your stance slightly behind the kitchen line. Always ensure you stay strictly behind the white boundary during rapid exchanges.

2. Leave a Visible Safety Gap

Leave a 1-inch gap between your shoe soles and the edge of the Kitchen line. This small buffer prevents accidental toe contact when shifting weight forward during fast volleys.

3. Control Your Athletic Balance

Foot faults usually happen when reaching out of balance. Bend your knees, keep your center of gravity low, and center your body weight so you can reach high volleys without momentum dragging your toes forward.

4. Play With Confidence

Once you establish a solid 1-inch gap and balanced athletic posture, you can focus on aggressive paddle positioning without second-guessing your footwork.
